Scrip News   – November and December are our biggest months for Scrip sales and I wanted to remind you that there are a lot of retailers who offer extra incentives at this time of the year.  Some of your favorite restaurants and stores offer extra percent back right now. This is a great time of year for you to start using Scrip and start building up your tuition credit.   For a complete list of bonus percent offers, go to the website glscrip.com and shopwithscrip.com.    Also just announced, Starbucks and Kohl’s have joined other retailers and offer ScripNow! as an option for us to purchase.  You can set up your presto pay and print ecards right at your house for any ScripNow! retailer.  You can get friends and relatives who do not live here to use ScripNow! and help you add to your tuition savings.   Any questions call Monica Damrow at 262-215-0511.  Happy shopping!  Please see the extra information sheet about SCRIP in today’s Family Envelope.

“Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.  They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over- twelve wicker baskets full.  Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children” Matthew 15:19 – 21

Have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving vacation!

Sincerely,

St. Andrew Parish Center: Your Input Requested

Fall  2013St A's Parish Center Pix

Dear Parish Family,

When the Parish census and survey was taken last year, one of the major items mentioned over and over by our parishioners , was the need for a completely accessible, near-to-the-church, ST. ANDREW PARISH CENTER.

Thanks to the blessings of some wonderful bequests, approximately half of the cost of a center has been set aside to proceed with this dream!

There is a picture of one idea which makes use of the old garage that is between the school and the church. The plan would include a 16ft. enlargement of the building so that we could include the following:

  • Space for meetings for groups of 2-85
    • A complete kitchen
    • A smaller room which could serve as a “bride’s room” or small conference room
    • Accessible bathrooms
    • Storage for use by parish committees
    • Patio space for outdoor functions
      • Large TV’s to broadcast Mass, school programs, etc. allowing for accessibility and inclusion when spaces are filled such as Easter Sunday and Christmas Eve masses.

We have an estimated cost of $330,000 for the renovation  of this space.  Again, approximately $165,000 of the Nelson bequest has been set aside for our Parish Center.

How do we make this dream a reality?

First step is to Gather Ideas! We would love the input of everyone in the Parish. We will be having two sessions to discuss this project and gather ideas. The two sessions will be:

(SUNDAY , NOVEMBER 17th at 7PM)

and, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 20th at 7PM.

Both sessions will be held in the cafeteria of the school. You only need to attend one or the other as they will both be brainstorming idea sessions.

Second step will be to present our plan to the Archdiocese for approval. Then, we will begin raising the remaining funds needed to make this dream a reality.

We look forward to building the St. Andrew Parish Center together.

Tornado Devastation Help: Please Bring Donations to St. Andrew School before Friday Nov. 22

Tornado Relief

As you may know, the city of Washington, IL (just outside of Peoria) was hit by a devastating tornado this past Sunday morning.  Thousands of people lost everything they own in a matter of minutes.

In my role as Retail Account Representative for Cargill Inc, I work with several large Ag Retailers across Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa.  One of the stores that I work with is located in Washington, IL.  Although we have not yet received word on any damage to the store itself, we do know that several of the store’s employees and families have been affected.

On Friday, November 22nd, my co-worker & I will be heading to Washington, IL to deliver donation items to those families in need.  I humbly and prayerfully ask you to support me in this effort.  If you have ANY items that can be donated, please consider doing so.  A list of suggested items is below.  All donations can be dropped off at St. Andrew’s School (during normal school hours) and put on the stage in the gym.  Please mark your donation “Tornado Relief”.  I will be collecting all the donated items on Thursday evening (November 21st) so they can be delivered to those in need on Friday.

Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Best regards,

Hollie Lefel

Tips for Parents on Parent-Teacher Conferences

How Should Parents Navigate This All-Important Meeting?   Educators Show the Way!

A key ingredient for educational achievement is the parent-teacher conference, and to make sure they’re successful for both parents and teachers, we’ve come up with a list of what educators would like parents to know.

The first on the list: Show up, please!

“We know parents are busy, but it is important to carve out time to invest in your child’s education and ensure success at school,” said National Education Association President Dennis Van Roekel. “To get the most out of parent-teacher conferences, parents need to take an active role in their child’s education year-round and come prepared to discuss how their child can reach their full potential.”

Here are the rest of our tips for parents:

Get Ready. Do your homework prior to parent-teacher conferences. Prepare by writing notes to yourself concerning:

  • Any questions about the school’s programs or policies.
  • Things you can share with the teacher about your child and his life at home.
  • Questions about your child’s progress.
  • What are my child’s strengths and weaknesses?
  • How does my child get along with classmates?
  • Is my child working up to her ability? Where could she use improvement?
  • What can we do at home to support what you are doing in the classroom?

Ask Important Questions. Don’t be afraid to engage in a frank conversation with your child’s teacher. Your goal is to develop an action plan for your child’s success at school. Good questions to ask the teacher include:

Initiate the Action Plan

Start immediately on the action plan you and the teacher put together. Discuss the plan with your child and track his progress. Stay in touch with your child’s teacher throughout the year with regularly scheduled “report card” conferences that can keep the communication lines open.

“Parents are the best resource for a child to make the grade,” said Van Roekel. “When teachers and parents work together, we can help a child have a successful school year.”

St. Andrew “PRIDE”

“The Lord has done great things for us; we are glad indeed”   Psalm 126:3

The Lord was at work on Saturday, November 2nd, blessing us with the results of the ”Soles” for Catholic Education Walk.  What a wonderful morning it was, to catch up with old friends, make new friends and to make the future brighter for the children of St. Andrew School.  The walk again proved what a special place St. Andrew Parish is.  The dollar amount raised is truly amazing, but also important was the building of community that occurred on this wonderful morning.  Due to everyone’s efforts, the “Soles” for Catholic Education Walk made $8,675That’s $2, 675 dollars more than our goal of $6,000!  After subtracting the $3,000 that is to be used for this year’s general school budget, that leaves $5,675 to be spent on upgrading technology at St. Andrew School.  The money raised from this event will help us cover the cost to put a SMARTBoard, Ipad and Apple TV in every classroom!

Wow!  On behalf of St. Andrew School, I would like to thank everyone that made this special event possible.  Special thanks goes to the 26 “teams” of families that took part in this walk, and to the many generous members of St. Andrew Parish.  God Bless You!

Sincerely,

John Chovanec, Principal
