St. Andrew “PRIDE” – As you know, the month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary.  According to an account by fifteenth-century Dominican, Alan de la Roch, Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1206 after he had been praying and doing severe penances because of his lack of success in combating heretics.  Mary praised him for his valiant fight against the heretics and then gave him the Rosary, explained its uses and told him to preach it to others.

The Holy Rosary was recited by St. Andrew School’s third through eighth grade students on Tuesday, Oct. 29th.  (K, 1 and 2 do their own Rosary Prayer Service that is more age appropriate)  I’d like to thank Father Angel for providing this wonderful experience for our students.  Throughout the year we have planned a number of prayer experiences (Individual Reconciliation during Advent and Lent, Eucharistic Adoration, Stations of the Cross, etc.) for our students to be involved in.  Such experiences as these bring to life for our students our wonderful Catholic traditions and affirm our Catholic identity.

We are certainly proud of the academic achievements of our students, but it’s our focus on the education of the whole child, and the instilling of Catholic values and traditions that is our greatest priority.  As Scripture states; “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”     Proverbs 22: 6

Sincerely,

Mr. John Chovanec, Principal

St. Andrew “PRIDE” In this weeks “St. Andrew PRIDE” section, I’d like to tell you about a very special service event that the children at our school are participating in.  Service is an integral part of the mission of a Catholic school.  Here at St. Andrew School all grades are actively involved in a number of service projects.

This year, all grades will be collecting grocery bags for the St. Andrew Parish Food Pantry.  Each grade will take a month to collect food items.  So far, our Kindergarten class collected food for the food pantry in September, and our sixth grade is collecting for October.  The rest of the food collection schedule for this year is: Fifth Grade – December, Second Grade – January, Seventh Grade – February, Third Grade – March, Eighth Grade – April, Fourth Grade – May and First Grade – June.  In November we will do our annual all-school food collection for Thanksgiving.

We at St. Andrew School feel that these service opportunities are an important part of our children’s education.  As Scripture states: “Children, let us love in deed and in truth and not merely talk about it.”     1 John 3:18

Sincerely,

John Chovanec, Principal

School Committee Meeting Minutes 09.11.13

ST. ANDREW SCHOOL COMMITTEE

REGULAR MEETING

SEPTEMBER 11, 2013

MINUTES

Members Present:        John Chovanec                           Jesse Wright

Cathy Gengler                            Shari Loback

Fr. Jim Schuerman                     Lauren Bandler

Dave Malisow                            Jeff Scherer

Ann Foster                                 Patti Soukup-Absent

Guests:                          Deb Amici

Beth Nateghi, Becki Brusa & Jen Martin (Home & School)

Sean McKean (Building & Grounds)

Tim Ruesch (AD – Athletic)

Darlene Sturtevant & Theresa Watts (Annual Fund)

Principal John Chovanec gave his Principal’s Report.  He reported that we are in need of estimates for installing the Smart Boards from St. Pat’s.  The goal is to have a Smart Board in each class room.  13 Ipads have been ordered with the Grant Money.  Apple TV’s.    The Family Welcome Back Picnic is scheduled for Thursday, September 12, 2013.  The school will be participating in the “Soles for Catholic Education” on November 2, 2013 at Mount Mary College.  This will replace the walk-a-thon held in previous years.  Principal John is the contact person for Soles for Catholic Education for our school.    Principal John suggested an alumni activity such as a Spring Co-ed Volleyball Tournament or Bowl-a-thon, and an alumni list is needed to contact all alumni.  St. Andrew’s gained 8 students from St. Pat’s.  A Back to School Parent Night is scheduled for Wednesday, September 25, 2013 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.

Deb Amici then gave the Teacher’s Report.  She indicated that this year was the best in-service meeting in years, as well as the best faculty meeting.   There will be a new Spanish program, and she noted that the students are happy and excited to be in school.  Principal John sent out a survey to the teachers.  Deb Amici said she would like to focus on building the curriculum in the 7th and 8th grades to make it more current.  She also talked about St. Andrew’s covenant and classroom rules.

St. Nick’s Breakfast – Jen Martin

Cathy Gengler gave the Finance report.  The school is down 5 people from what was budgeted for the school year. Our tuition revenue is short of budget by $22,000.00.  We had budgeted for 9 St. Pat’s students to attend but only 8 are enrolled which created a budget shortfall of $5,787.00.  The St. Ben’s contribution is short of budget by $7,140.00 due to 2 of their students transferring to a Lake Geneva School as their mom received a teaching position in Lake Geneva.  Also, families with 3 children have decided this year to become full-time parishioners of St. Andrew’s.  The decrease in student head count is also attributed to families moving out of the area.

Darlene Sturtevant and Theresa Watts gave a report on the Annual Fund.  The prior year’s donor list needs to be updated.  It was suggested that there be one central list for fundraising.  Other fundraising ideas mentioned were wreath sales and cook dough sales.

Becki Brusa of the Home & School Committee reported on the upcoming Welcome Back to School picnic and suggested additional events for parents and students.  What is the role of the Home & School Committee?

Athletic Director Tim Ruesch advised that 18 girls are on the volleyball team.  He would like to get the scoreboard from St. Pat’s and is talking to Ray Henderson.  Tim reported that basketball will start on November 1, 2013.

Sean McKean of the Building & Grounds Committee reported that the new hot water heater has been installed.  We have secured the Smart Boards from St. Pat’s, and we are checking into books for the classrooms.  We have received an estimate for the parking lot resurfacing of $180,000.00 including repainting the lines.  The boiler is paid for at an approximate cost of $60,000.00.  The school bell system is not working for the older grades.  Principal John is looking into the installation of the Smart Boards.

Susan O’Grady of the Technology Committee reported that 4 modems have been installed.  13 I pads have been ordered.  New computers are needed for the computer lab.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.

St. Andrew “PRIDE”  In this week’s St. Andrew “PRIDE” section, I’d like to tell you about a very special event that occurred at St. Andrew School last Friday, September 20th.

In 1981, the United Nations established September 21st as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace among all nations and peoples.  It has been declared as a day of nonviolence and ceasefire.

Unfortunately, our society has become one in which every day we are bombarded with violence on television, in video games and in music.  Violence has become commonplace and accepted as part of our society.  For too many people, violence is a part of their every day life.

In 2005, a group of teachers in Florida started the “Pinwheels for Peace” Program to make a public statement about children’s feelings on war and to encourage peace, cooperation, harmony and unity.  Thousands of Art Teachers, including our own Ms. Marsicano at St. Andrew’s, have involved their students in this project.  The pinwheels are a visual sign that violence can be overcome, if we let God’s love for all enter into our hearts.  We pray that our pinwheels will spread our prayers for peace in our families, school, community, and all over the world.  As Scripture states: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you”. John 14: 27

Sincerely,

St. Andrew “PRIDE”  In this week’s St. Andrew “PRIDE” section, I’d like to share with you some information about SMART Board Technology being used at St. Andrew School:

“I cannot even imagine how wonderful it would be to have a permanent one in my room!”  This comment came from a teacher at St. Andrew School who has developed exciting and effective lesson plans with the SMART Board software. And it shows.  I recently observed her class in action in the SMARTRoom and was amazed at the interaction and interest of the students as they participated in the lesson.

Another teacher said, “I use it in the Learning Center and it is awesome! I use it for language arts, science and math, while learning the potential of the SMART Board’s computer assisted interactive white board technology.

What are they?

If you watch NFL football and see TV commentators using an index finger to graphically illustrate a just completed pass play from Aaron Rodgers to James Jones, you are observing one simple use of an interactive white board.

The technology has been around for about 15 years, but only in the past couple of years has the SMART Board been somewhat more affordable.  As a result they are widely being introduced to area schools in support of basic learning and have become an important tool for advanced study in almost every discipline in primary education.

Computer software such as Kidspiration, Inspiration, Tessellations, Terrapin Logo, Stratalogica and the Office Suite, along with literally hundreds of other applications lend themselves to improving and speeding up the learning process in most subject studies from pre-Kindergarten on up through all the grades.

What the teachers are saying

St. Andrew School has had a SMARTBoard since 2010-11.  We currently have two SMARTBoards.  Early evaluation, in spite of limited time for training and application development, has shown universal acceptance and enthusiasm.

After using the tool for a short time, one of the teachers said, “The use of the SMART Board needs to be a requirement for all teachers. I believe regular use of the SMART Board will enliven the curriculum by making it interactive and exciting for the student.  They love technology and “It provides a bigger view of how to perform math skills and gives children a chance to work out problems.”

Another teacher stated, “I can train myself if I had a SMART Board in my room at all times…”

The Plan for the Future

As mentioned earlier in this Parent Newsletter, money raised from “Soles for Catholic Education”, well be put towards a goal of having a SMARTBoard, Ipad and Apple TV in every classroom.  The accomplishment of this goal will have a major positive impact on the education of all of our students.  PLEASE SEE THE FLYER IN TODAY’S FAMILY ENVELOPE TO SEE HOW YOU CAN HELP US MEET OUR GOAL!

This is just one of the exciting changes that we have going on at St. Andrew School.  As a school community, we are always working to improve for the future.  As scripture states: “ I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.     Jeremiah 29: 11

Sincerely,

John Chovanec, Principal

St. Andrew “PRIDE”  –This Fall marks the 72nd anniversary of the opening of St. Andrew School.  Since 1941, St. Andrew School has been providing quality Catholic education for parents that choose a faith-filled education for their children.

In 1939, the Sisters of St. Francis came to begin a Catholic educational program in Delavan.  In 1941, a kindergarten was started in the convent at 119 South 7th Street (where the school gym now stands) and a grade was added every year thereafter.  The school was built in 1948 and in May of that year, all of the classes were moved into the new school building, as we know it today. The Auditorium/Gymnasium was added in 1956. (This information is from the 2010 St. Andrew Parish Directory, p.6)

From the beginning, St. Andrew School has stressed academic excellence in combination with a Faith-filled curriculum, guided by both teachers and parents alike.  This has proven to be a winning combination.  When families, teachers and students are all working together, St. Andrew School is proof that tremendous things can happen.  You can have faith that your children are receiving a great education, because it is with Faith that we teach.  As Scripture states: “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

Thank you Home and School – I’d like to thank the Home and School Association for the wonderful Spiritwear that they gave me this week.  Your generosity and kindness is much appreciated.  I feel proud to be a St. Andrew Spartan!

St. Andrew “PRIDE” – During this upcoming school year, I will be using this section of the Parent Newsletter to keep you informed of the many wonderful things that we have to be proud of at St. Andrew School.  Although I’ve only been here a short time, during my visit last spring and my work here this summer, I have been witness to many of the reasons for this school community’s source of pride.  In fact, each letter in the word “PRIDE” can stand for a topic that helps to explain why St. Andrew School is such an exceptional place:

P – Prayer – St. Andrew School, with the support of our Parish, has been blessed with a very                             strong prayer community.  Prayer is an important part of all of our students’ lives on                      a daily basis.

R -Respect – As I visited the school last spring, I was happy to see the respectful environment                           that filled the halls at St. Andrew School.  We will continue to promote that respect                       between teachers, students and community.

I – Intellectual Gifts – As the results of our standardized tests show, St. Andrew’s students have                                      been blessed with many intellectual gifts.  We will continue to work to                                           provide an atmosphere of high expectations and academic excellence.

D –Determination – I have met so many people who are determined to make St. Andrew School                                  the best that it can be.  When parents, staff and students all work together,                                     amazing things can happen!

E –Examples of Christ’s Love – Our students have been, and will continue to be examples of                                         Christ’s love in the community.

I am proud to join this tradition of excellence.  I thank those from the past that have made this possible, and I look forward to working with you to bring about a very bright future.  As Scripture states: “ I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29: 11

Sincerely,
